The Department of Fire and Emergency Services with the Newfoundland and Labrador government will not be implementing province-wide 911 service until the new year.

The new service was expected to be fully operational by the end of 2014, but the department said it allotted extra time to "ensure all technological and data requirements are met before the service goes live."

In addition to the change in timeline, the department also announced on Monday the new executive director of the NL 911 Bureau Inc., which is the governing body for the service.

Former St. John's Regional Fire Department Chief Michael Dwyer will take on the role.

When the service comes online, 911 service will be available to all residents in the province with a landline.

The service will also work wherever a cellular signal can be found.
