DarkNL problems still haven't been addressed, says Dale Kirby

The Newfoundland and Labrador Liberals think that lessons were not learned during widespread power outages in 2014, during a period known as DarkNL.

Liberal MHA Dale Kirby said he still has a lot of questions following a power failure on Wednesday of this week that stretched from St. John's to central Newfoundland.

Kirby thinks no real changes have taken place to prevent such incidents from happening again.

"You wonder whether or not the people who are at the tiller have changed their ways or have really learned anything from all that experience last year," he said.

The Liberals want a better explanation of how 80,000 people were left without power during the morning commute on Wednesday.

Kirby said it's clear the powers-that-be were not as prepared as they claimed to be.

"I mean, this just didn't arise overnight, they've had over a year to address those problems and it clearly hasn't happened."

Kirby believes people should have been given an advanced warning to conserve electricity before the power failure happened.

He said Natural Resources Minister Derrick Dalley, whose department oversees Nalcor, must take responsibility for the incident.
