Coyote causes stir at Newfoundland school

Not indigenous to island, coyotes are becoming more prominent
A coyote was the star attraction at a school in a suburban neighbourhood just outside St. John's on Monday morning.
The animal paced around the schoolyard at Paradise Elementary just as the school was preparing for regular classes. The animal eventually left the school grounds, which are near both a wooded area and major thoroughfares, including the Trans-Canada Highway.
Although coyotes have long had a presence in many Canadian cities, the animals are comparatively new to Newfoundland, where they are not indigenous.
Sightings in the St. John's area, though, have been becoming increasingly common.
