Confirmation of St. John's AHL team coming Friday

The AHL will be returning to St. John's.

A release from the people behind the move to bring an AHL team to the city have confirmed a morning news conference, Friday morning, for what it describes as "a signficant announcement regarding the future of AHL hockey in Newfoundland and Labrador."

The release said former premier Danny Williams, one of the driving forces behind efforts to bring professional hockey back to the city, will be joined by Craig Heisinger, the director of hockey operations and assistant general manager of Winnipeg's new NHL franchise.

Expect a party-type atmosphere, with the public being invited to the event "to support the return of the AHL to Newfoundland and Labrador," and people are being asked to wear their favourite hockey jerseys for the event.

Organizers will be joined by celebrities actor Allan Hawco, of the CBC television show Republic of Doyle, musician Alan Doyle, of Great Big Sea and comedian Mark Critch, of CBC's This Hour has 22 Minutes, along with Newfoundland NHL player Luke Adam, who will all take part in a street hockey-style game during the announcement at Mile One Stadium at 11 a-m.
