The refinery at Come By Chance in eastern Newfoundland will not be able to resume operations until later this week after being knocked out of commission by the island-wide power failure.

The North Atlantic refinery lost power this weekend, during a collapse that saw customers across Newfoundland lose electricity.

Amid rolling blackouts prompted by deeply cold temperatures and compromised infrastructure at Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro, a fire at the Sunnyside station triggered an island-wide collapse of the electrical system.

"We did lose power and [are] working on restart this week," said Gloria Slade, communications manager with North Atlantic.
