Clarenville hopes to host 2015 Allan Cup

Hockey fans in Clarenville are looking forward to the spring of 2015.

The town will most likely be hosting the 2015 Allan Cup — the national championship of senior men's hockey.

The tournament will be held in Newfoundland and Labrador, marking the second time the province has hosted the event. And Clarenville was the only town to put in a bid to host it.

Fraser Russell is president of the Clarenville Caribous hockey team.

"I suppose if you look at that we were the only bidder, I guess it would be logical to assume that we would get it," said Russell. "But of course it was to be dealt with by the HNL board of directors, and we're certainly hoping that in the next three weeks they will do that and probably bring it to a conclusion."

The Caribous won the Allan Cup in 2011.

Sir H. Montague Allan donated the cup in 1909 shortly after the Stanley Cup became the official championship trophy for professional hockey clubs.
