Charges against OCI withdrawn in death on Katsheshuk II
Proceedings continue against related company
The Crown has withdrawn eight charges laid against Ocean Choice International Inc. under the Occupational Health and Safety Act related to a death aboard a fishing vessel two years ago.
A St. Anthony man, 25, died aboard the Katsheshuk II in February 2012 when a small steel door in the hold of the ship slammed on his neck.
Eight charges against another company, Katsheshuk Fisheries Limited, remain before the courts.
According to the Innu Development Limited Partnership (IDLP), Katsheshuk Fisheries is jointly owned by the IDLP and Ocean Choice International.
The case is scheduled to return to provincial court next month.
The Katsheshuk II was about 100 kilometres off Cape Freels when the fatal accident happened.
Last year, the Transportation Safety Board cited a lack of training, a broken piece of equipment, and overall unsafe work conditions as contributing factors in the death.
