Central Newfoundland community wants resettlement

A town councillor on Little Bay Islands has sent a written request in to the provincial government asking for resettlement.

Not enough people in the Notre Dame Bay community supported resettlement two years ago, but Coun. Dennis Budgell said it's time to reconsider.

"I was asked by the majority of the community to go in for it, because most of them are over the age of 65 and they know now what services we got here is not well," Budgell said.

"Most of them are getting too old and they can hardly get to the hospital, so they would like for government to step in and resettle them."

Budgell said the majority of people in the community do not have full-time employment.

"I can understand the people that don't want to leave  I wouldn't want to leave, either, if I had a full-time job," he said.

According to Budgell, there are only two students enrolled in the school in the community.

He said if government resettled Little Bay Islands, they would be saving themselves a lot of money.

"Within two years, [government] would be in money," he said.

Budgell said the average age of the population of Little Bay Islands is around 65.
