RCMP are continuing to investigate the cause of a fatal collision in Benoit's Cove that happened just after 10 p.m. Tuesday.

One male driver in his mid-30s was killed in the two-car collision. The female driver of the second vehicle was taken to hospital and released Wednesday.

Volunteers from the South Shore Fire Department as well as the RCMP remained on the scene through Wednesday working to determine a cause and clean up debris.

"It's currently under investigation, but it appears by the damage to the vehicles that it was a head-on, but it's still under investigation," said Const. Jim Woodrow.

"The vehicles were occupied by one person in each vehicle, the driver obviously. One driver has since been pronounced deceased. The other driver has been treated in hospital and released."

Collision analysts spent Wednesday morning trying to figure out what caused the crash along Route 450, the road connecting the south shore of the Bay of Islands to Corner Brook.

Traffic was limited to one lane through Wednesday.

No identities have been released at this point.
