Citizen's arrest? Car owner notices theft, detains suspect himself

A 30-year-old man attempting to steal from a vehicle in St. John's received a rude awakening on Friday.

The alleged thief triggered a car alarm on Ropewalk Lane on Friday morning, and when the vehicle's owner heard the alarm go off, he sprung into action.

He detained the man and called the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary, who arrived shortly after and took the man into custody.

When officers arrived at the scene, they executed an outstanding search warrant on the accused, and also charged him with theft, malicious damage, and breaching court orders.

Police took the man into custody, and he was held for a provincial court appearance.
