A Carbonear businesswoman has created a unique Christmas ornament for mothers, and it's proven to be her most popular to date.

Danielle Gear, who runs Danielle Design, a shop which specializes in crafts and cakes, has created an ornament that depicts a mummer — but not just your average mummer. This one is nursing an infant.

The ornament is made from polymer clay, and stands about five inches tall, and comes in a variety of typical mummer attire.

Gear said she started the project as a fundraiser for the La Leche League in St. John's, an organization that promotes and offers support to breastfeeding families, and part of the proceeds will go to the group.

"I've been making mummers for a really long time out of this clay and I breastfeed my little girl, and when I was at a support group I was just talking about them and one of the nurses there said, 'Why don't you make a breastfeeding mummer?'" said Gear.

"I thought that was such a great idea that I went home and I made the [first] one … and I just fell in love with it."

Gear said she thought it was funny that she ended up making these ornaments, when just last year she wound up breastfeeding her daughter while out mummering at Christmas time.

According to Gear, the response from other mothers has been phenomenal.

"Mothers have really, really taken to it, and really, really enjoyed what I have to offer. I've gotten a lot of orders. It's definitely the most popular thing that I've ever made — it's really special."

Gear said the first one she created isn't for sale, and she's keeping it for her own tree, but she's been making more ornaments for sale — although no two are alike.
