Bail set over for 2 men accused of alleged Paradise attack
Lawyer Averill Baker says her client was robbed
Justin Jennings and Michael Stacey, the two men accused in an alleged attack that police say involved a man being robbed, assaulted and held against his will, will have to wait at least a week before a bail hearing.
Stacey, 38, is facing two charges of forcible confinement, two counts of robbery, and eight counts of failing to comply with conditions of an undertaking.
30-year-old Jennings from Paradise is accused of assault causing bodily harm, pointing a firearm, forcible confinement, uttering threats, two counts of robbery, failing to stop a motor vehicle, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and multiple counts of failing to comply with an undertaking.
However, during Jennings' appearance at provincial court in St. John's on Tuesday, his lawyer Averill Baker said her client was the one who was robbed.
Baker questioned why the complainant in the case — a 27-year-old man — wasn't charged.
The well-known attorney took the time to discuss how, she says, Jennings is being treated at the lockup in St. John's.
"Something is going very wrong with this system," Baker told Judge Colin Flynn, adding that Jennings was strip searched "for no good reason" after she visited him the night before at the facility.
Both Stacey and Jennings will return to court next Tuesday, at which time a date may be set for a bail hearing.
