Annual CBC fundraiser doubles donations

Organizers of the 6th annual CBC Newfoundland and Labrador pancake breakfast say they're ecstatic with the final tally from Tuesday's event that raises money to help homeless people across the province.

Organizers of the 6th annual CBC Newfoundland and Labrador pancake breakfast say they're ecstatic with the final tally from Tuesday's event that raises money to help homeless people.

Hundreds of people showed up to events held across the province, raising more than $20,000 and shattering last year's $11,000 total.

David Murphy, coordinator of the Newfoundland and Labrador Housing and Homelessness Network, called the results of the fundraiser "exceptional."

Well-known CBC personalities Debbie Cooper, Jonathan Crowe and Ryan Snoddon spent the morning alongside high-profile municipal politicians, such as St. John's Deputy Mayor Shannie Duff and St. John's Mayor Dennis O'Keefe, serving pancakes in St. John's, Mount Pearl and Conception Bay South.

Similar fundraisers were held in Clarenville, Grand Falls-Windsor, Corner Brook and Happy Valley-Goose Bay.

"The event came together beautifully, nearly doubling last year's efforts," Murphy told CBC News.

He said the money raised this year, $21,426.00, will be given to agencies such as Stella Burry, Community Youth Network, Choices For Youth, Status of Women's Council and Marguerite's Place.

The groups will use the money to address affordable housing issues across the province.
