Anastasia Qupee elected as Innu Nation Grand Chief

The Innu Nation in Labrador held its general election on Friday, and Anastasia Qupee has become the next Grand Chief.

Anastasia Qupee became the new Grand Chief for the Innu Nation in Labrador following a general election on Friday.

Of the six candidates for Grand Chief, Qupee received 468 votes.

The other candidates were Yvette Michel, Simon Osmond, Michel Rich, Mike Rich and Kanani Penashue Davis.

Qupee replaces Prote Poker as Grand Chief.

Simeon Tshakapesh elected Deputy Grand Chief

Simeon Tshakapesh, who is a former Natuashish band council chief, defeated Prote Poker to become the Deputy Grand Chief.

Tshakapesh received 641 votes. He replaces Jeremy Andrew.   

A new Board of Directors for both communities of Sheshatshiu and Natuashish was also elected.

The new directors in Sheshatshiu are Eugene Hart, Bernice Penashue, Agatha Pone, Louisiana Rich, Gervais Penashue and Etienne Rich.

The newly-elected Natuashish directors are Clarence Nui, Pater Pasteen, Penash Rich, Edward Piwas, Agathe Rich and Nora Mistanapeu. 

The Innu Nation is the organization that formally represents the Innu of Labrador, approximately 2,200 people, most of whom live in the two Innu communities of Sheshatshiu and Natuashish.
