All hope not lost for Wabush Mines, MHA says
Liberal MHA Graham Letto says the Newfoundland and Labrador government is still working to find a new operator for Wabush Mines, even though talks recently collapsed.
In a news release Tuesday, Letto said despite ERP Compliant Fuels' attempt to purchase the closed mine from Cliff Natural Resources, the province is still in talks to find a "successful resolution to an arrangement that may see Wabush Mines reopen for business."
Letto, who represents the district of Labrador West, said the government will make sure any company interested in purchasing the mine will have all the information they need about the operation.
Wabush has been in a state of turmoil since 2014, when the mine closed. Workers' medical benefits were reduced or cancelled.
Residents were given a glimmer of hope in April, after Virginia-based ERP Compliant Fuels submitted a bid to Cliffs Natural Resources.
It would have meant the addition of 300-400 new jobs.
The potential deal fell apart last month.
