Former Newfoundland and Labrador premier Danny Williams is close to striking a deal to bring an American Hockey League team to St. John's.

"This opportunity was too good to let go," said Williams Wednesday evening.

"This was probably our last shot at an AHL team."

Williams has tentative deals with St. John's Sports and Entertainment and the current owner of the AHL's Manitoba Moose, True North Sports and Entertainment Ltd.

SJSE manages the Mile One Centre in St. John's.

St. John's council will have to ratify the deal and the arrangement would still have to be ratified by the AHL before the team would come to the capital city.
