Historic hardware store in Port au Port West destroyed by fire
Abbott and Haliburton, open since 1885, burned to the ground Monday
Investigators have not been able to access the scene, after a fire engulfed a business on Main Road in Port au Port West on Newfoundland's west coast early Monday.
Bay St. George RCMP responded to the fire at 5 a.m. at the Abbott and Haliburton Home Building Centre, a historic business that first opened in 1885.
The Port au Port Fire Department was on scene and fighting the blaze.
There were no reported injuries.
RCMP say the fire was extinguished early Monday afternoon, but firefighters remain at the scene to deal with potential hot spots.
Front Road remains open, but police say only local traffic is being permitted along Main Road.
Abbott and Halliburton is totally gone. Sad to lose such a good business like that. Will be missed. <a href="https://twitter.com/CBCNL">@CBCNL</a> <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/fire?src=hash">#fire</a> <a href="https://t.co/wvZmvI4GDJ">pic.twitter.com/wvZmvI4GDJ</a>
