The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary detachment in Corner Brook will continue to relay 911 calls, according to a release issued Thursday by the minister responsible for fire and emergency services.

Minister Eddie Joyce says RNC will continue relaying calls for volunteer fire departments in the Corner Brook and Bay of Islands area in the new year.

This statement comes after government announced back in November of 2014 that fire departments in those regions would stop receiving 911 fire services in January of this year.

Government plans to implement a province-wide emergency system that will funnel all calls from Newfoundland and Labrador to dispatch centres in St. John's and Corner Brook.

Joyce said the service will be extended until that new emergency notification system is fully in place.

The service, he said, will continue to be provided to fire departments in Cox's Cove, Gillams, Hughes Brook-Irishtown-Summerside, Massey Drive, McIvers, Meadows, Mount Moriah, Pasadena, Steady Brook-Little Rapids, South Shore and York Harbour-Lark Harbour.
