Three people are dead following two separate traffic accidents over the Canada Day holiday weekend.

Alice Noseworthy, 80, of St. John's and her granddaughter Johanna Noseworthy, 18, of Garnish, were killed Saturday morning on the Trans-Canada Highway near St. John's.

Their car hit the highway median near the Kenmount Road turnoff, became airborne and landed on its roof.

They were both pronounced dead at the scene.

Meanwhile, a 16-year-old boy was also killed Saturday, in a single-vehicle accident on the Northern Peninsula.

He was a passenger in a van that hydroplaned, went off the road and hit a boulder along Route 430, near Castor River North.

Two of the three other people in the van were treated for injuries that were described as not being life-threatening.
