2016 Newfoundland and Labrador Summer Games open in Conception Bay South
More than 1,500 athletes officially start games at opening ceremony event
Top young athletes across the province are competing in the Newfoundland and Labrador Summer Games, which kicked off Saturday in Conception Bay South.
More than 1,500 athletes between the ages of 12 to 18 are expected to take part in the games, which runs from Aug. 13-21.
The opening ceremonies for this year's games got underway Saturday night in C.B.S.
Eight Newfoundland and Labrador regions are invited to play at the games, as well as St. Pierre & Miquelon.
As well, this year will feature the first-ever Aboriginal teams — Team Nunatsiavut, Team Innu Nation, Team Mi'kmaq and Team NunatuKavut.
The Games committee says the whole community comes together to help with the event, including some 500 to 700 volunteers who will be working hard to make them a success.
