The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary's dog unit was called in early Wednesday after an alleged drunk driving incident involving an all-terrain vehicle.

The RNC said the men were seen on an ATV in the middle of the Conception Bay Highway around 1:30 a.m., in the Manuels neighbourhood of Conception Bay South.

Both men tried to escape on foot, police said.

While one man was arrested right away, police used a dog unit for about an hour to track down the second suspect.

The 19-year-old man driving the ATV faces charges of impaired driving, evading police and a breach of an undertaking.

The passenger — a 20-year-old man — faces a charge of assault and three breaches of court orders.

Both were held in custody early Wednesday for an appearance in provincial court in St. John's.
