A Fredericton man says he was the victim of a prank that could have had serious medical implications.

Three weeks ago, Stephen Legacy was finishing a cup of coffee at a local McDonald's when he found the remnants of blue pills sitting at the bottom of his cup.

"It was Viagra," said Legacy, 55.

"I went to the hospital. I found it weird … So I went to the hospital and the doctor took a blood test and that's what it was. So he gave me stuff to kill the effect."

Legacy, originally from Bathurst, said he'd taken the lid off his coffee to let it cool while he was at the McDonald's restaurant on Prospect Street.

He said he left the drink unsupervised for a short time while he bent down to lace up his boots.

"I noticed my boot was untied," said Legacy.

"And somebody went and put some pills in it. I don't know who. I know there was a bunch of kids there at that point."

Legacy said he doesn't believe staff would have ever done something like this and said he believed he was most likely the victim of a prank by students from Fredericton High School.

The McDonald's is just a few hundred metres from the school and is often packed with students who go there during their lunch hour.

"There were a lot of kids there," said Legacy.

"I'm guessing it was some of them."

Videos of kids pranking people with Viagra are popular online.

But taking the drug, prescribed for erectile dysfunction, can cause significant health problems. Heart attack, stroke, irregular heartbeat and death are all side effects listed on the drug maker's website.

Legacy said his health is "a-OK" following the prank. He said he's not looking for compensation, or justice, but wants to warn others about what happened.
