Three Fathers Memorial Run finishes at new RCMP monument

Hundreds of families will mark Father's Day on Sunday in Moncton by running or walking three kilometres in memory of three RCMP constables who were killed on June 4, 2014.

$18K in bursaries will be awarded to local grads for leadership, courage and community involvement

Nadine Larche expects hundreds of families will take part in what has become an annual Father's Day run in Moncton to remember the three RCMP officers who were killed on June 4, 2014, including her husband, Cst. Doug Larche.

Larche, who is president of the organizing committee, says this year the Three Fathers Memorial Run will begin near the Codiac RCMP detachment, and for the first time it will end near the new memorial.

"It's something for everybody to come together as a family … like I walk with my three girls," she said in an interview on Information Morning Moncton.

"For me I'm very touched and humbled to see everybody come out as a community … he was my husband and he loves to run, that's what he did, he ran on those very trails that we'll be running on."

The first run was held just days after the fatal shootings as members of the community looked for a way to show their support to the grieving families and the RCMP.

This year the finish line will take on new meaning for Larche, as the statues of the three fallen officers, which are part of the new memorial, will be in sight.

"Last year's medal, I actually hid it on the base of Doug's statue because I'm so proud of what we're doing, it's such a great legacy and it's hidden down at the bottom of the statue to forever be remembered."

Money raised goes to local grads

Larche says this year $18,000 raised in the 2015 run is being awarded to 18 graduates from the six high schools in Moncton, Dieppe and Riverview.

"We chose three people from each of those high schools to receive a $1,000 bursary … and those are going to kids who have displayed strong ethics, volunteerism, bravery, community involvement. All things that we saw in Doug, Dave and Fabrice."

The Three Fathers Memorial Run begins at 8:30 a.m. on Sunday at Bore Park with a ceremony that will include the awarding of the bursaries.

This year the event will also include a relay with distances of 4 km, 6 km and 14 km chosen to correspond with the date of the shootings.

Larche expects more than 1,300 people will take part.

Constables Larche, Fabrice Gevaudan and Dave Ross were killed as they responded to a call regarding a man carrying weapons on June 4, 2014.

Moncton resident Justin Bourque pleaded guilty to the shootings, and received five life sentences, with no chance of parole for 75 years.
