Summer camper diagnosed with swine flu in N.B.
A young girl attending summer camp in New Brunswick has been diagnosed with swine flu.
Caton’s Island Camp, located off the Kingston Peninsula near Saint John, is owned and operated by the Wesleyan Church.
The 11-year-old girl was tested for strep throat and swine flu before she went to camp. Only her strep throat test came back positive, so she was prescribed antibiotics and sent to camp, Dean Stephenson, the camp's executive director, said Friday.
But her parents called the camp Wednesday to say she had also tested positive for H1N1 virus, Stephenson said.
Stephenson said he would not have allowed the girl to attend camp if he had known about the testing.
"Well, I'd have probably said, you know, pick another camp, come at a later date. We would have just transferred her to another [later] camp because we run three camps for this age group, and this is the first one," he said.
Officials with the New Brunswick Health Department have told the camp that the girl might not have been contagious, but precautions are being taken just in case, Stephenson said.
A letter to parents is being sent home Friday with campers to advise them of the situation.
About 80 children were attending the camp this week.
Dozens of children at three summer camps in Ontario's Muskoka region have been sent home after an outbreak of swine flu, health officials said Wednesday.
