A sudden death in eastern New Brunswick has prompted police to issue a warning about an "extremely dangerous substance."

Richibucto RCMP say the death occurred in Jardineville, about 80 kilometres north of Moncton.

RCMP said the victim is believed to have used a drug containing carfentanil, a synthetic opioid that is significantly stronger than fentanyl. It is possibly in a blue or green powder form.

"We urge everyone to exercise extreme caution and avoid purchasing or consuming any drugs that may be circulating in the region," Insp. Maxime Babineau of the Southeast District RCMP said in the release.

"The health and safety of those we serve remains our top priority. Our thoughts are with the deceased's family, friends and community."
