Storm evacuates Charlo homes and cottages

Several homes and cottages were evacuated in the village of Charlo Monday following a storm surge.

Several homes and cottages were evacuated in the village of Charlo Monday following a storm surge.

It happened late Monday afternoon as high tide hit.

Mayor Andre Carrier said about a dozen homes are affected.

Carrier said they lost electricity and were in danger of being cut off because the waves were breaking over the road.

"Between 3:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. we blocked down a section of the highway in Charlo between the Irving and the Heron's Nest cottages," said Sgt. Scott Sawyer with the RCMP. "The ocean was coming over the road. There were five or six people in those cottages who needed to get out of there before the road might be impassable."

Sawyer said it was expected to stabilize Monday evening when the tide falls.

Carrier said the community has set up a relief centre at the local Golden Age Club.

Meanwhile, storm surge was also being blamed for flooding in the Hillsborough area.
