A 17-year-old high school student is in critical condition after nearly drowning on Sunday at the Canada Games Aquatic Centre in Saint John.

The young man was pulled from the pool around 3:30 p.m. and he was unresponsive after lifeguards performed CPR on him.

Saint John Police Sgt. Glen Hayward said the police will look into whether there were enough lifeguards and staff on duty at the time.

"That would be part of the investigation, to find that out, but that's not really ... a police matter," he said.

The teen was transported to the Saint John Regional Hospital by ambulance and he is still in the intensive care unit. He is in critical condition.

Hayward said it does not appear the boy hit his head but it is being treated as an accident.

The young man is a student at Simonds High School, and police say his family In China is being contacted to be told what happened.
