Road resurfaced in fall still one of 'worst' roads in Atlantic Canada

Charters Settlement Road is nominated in a CAA contest as one of Atlantic Canada's worst roads, despite being resurfaced last fall.

A New Brunswick road that was recently resurfaced is a surprise contender for the worst road in Atlantic Canada.

Charters Settlement road was resurfaced last fall, and is now part of a Canadian Automobile Association contest that recognizes roads littered with potholes.

Resident Earl Sharpe has been living in the area for 40 years and says the worst part of the road is the section that was resurfaced just before the provincial election in September.

“Within three days, there were no less than 30 or 40 potholes in the upper end,” he said.

“We've have people with bent rims, with flat tires.”

MLA Jeff Carr said the resurfacing didn’t happen because of the election, although he admits something must have gone wrong.

“If they have some reason to believe that whatever material wasn't the proper material, then they'll correct that as well for the future,” he said.

Officials with the Department of Transportation say they're looking into the circumstances surrounding how the road was resurfaced.

Provincial highway 616 in Keswick Ridge is also nominated as one of Atlantic Canada's worst roads.
