About 100 New Brunswick roads closed due to flooding

More than 140 provincial roads, bridges and culverts have been affected by flooding, with about 100 roads closed.

The Trans-Canada Highway between Fredericton and Moncton could be shut down until next week

Road closures are piling up across the province as water levels continue to rise along the St. John River this week.

Route 10 in Chipman, N.B., remains closed due to water over the road but Ahmed Dassouki, director of operations with the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure, said a resource road is available for emergency vehicles and larger vehicles, such as a half-ton truck.

"Smaller vehicles, such as as passenger car, are not recommended on this road," he said.

"This is not a designated highway, to maintain the condition of the road for those who need to use it, we ask people to stay off of it unless they need to get in or out of the community."

The province closed Route 10 on Saturday afternoon.

Meanwhile, the Trans-Canada Highway between Fredericton and Moncton could be closed until next week.

Dassouki said the detour will remain in place until further notice as water still remains high along parts of the Trans-Canada Highway.

Trucks and cars are taking routes through Saint John instead. Westbound traffic will be detoured to Route 1 at River Glade and eastbound traffic to Route 7 at Oromocto.

"Until the road is safe it will be closed," Dassouki said. "We're monitoring it more than once a day."

The highway initially closed on Thursday evening due to rising water levels.

"We continue to ask residents to respect the barricades and stay off of flooded roads for your safety and the safety of the first responders who may have to rescue you," Dassouki said. "If there is a barricade up, it's because the road is not safe."

More than 140 provincial roads, bridges and culverts have been affected by flooding, with about 100 roads closed.
