The first recipient of a bursary set up at St. Malachy's Memorial High School in memory of Codiac Regional RCMP Const. Douglas James Larche was announced Friday as being Michael Woodhouse.

The $500 award was presented during the Saint John school's graduation ceremony at the Imperial Theatre.

"According to the awards committee, Michael Woodhouse is a very involved student, in many aspects of the school," said Larche's widow, Nadine Larche, who was unable to attend the event in person, but prepared a written statement.

"He exhibits selflessness, helps others, and plans to pursue a career in law enforcement," she said.

"I am honoured that Michael is the first recipient of the bursary, and can think of no better way to honour my husband's sacrifice, and keep his memory alive for years to come."

Douglas James Larche, who graduated from St. Malachy's in 1992, was one of three Moncton Mounties killed by a gunman on June 4, 2014.

Nathan Davis, a former classmate of Larche, helped set up the bursary in the hopes it will be a way for future St. Malachy's students to always remember the fallen officer.

Larche is survived by his wife and three young daughters.

The other slain officers were Const. Fabrice Gevaudan and Const. Dave Ross.
