New Brunswick VW owners react to news their cars cheated on emissions tests

Some of New Brunswick's Volkswagen drivers say they're disappointed the company cheated to pass emissions tests.

Volkswagen says 11 million of its vehicles contained the so-called "defeat device" that allowed them to falsely pass emissions tests.

Mike Kueppers owns Alpine Motors, which services German engineered cars in Saint John. He's owned several VWs.

"I like the product, I just don't get why they did this," he said.

Environment Canada is investigating the deception, as is the U.S. justice department.

Travis Allaby drives a VW and says he thought the emissions claims were too good to be true.

"Car companies do a lot of tricky things lately to fool us with gas mileage. Not really totally shocked, but it is kind of disheartening. I am quite a fan of Volkswagen," he said.

The cars will be hard to get rid of. Jim Gilbert owns a large used car dealership in Fredericton.

"We wouldn't be interested in taking in any diesels on trade until Volkswagen solves their problem," he said.

"If you're a diesel Volkswagen owner right now, and you felt that you bought the car for the right reason, well it's just the wrong time."

Volkswagen Canada has issued a nation-wide stop-sale of affected vehicles. Diesel models make up 22 percent of Canadian sales. VW dealerships are right in the middle of their annual Volksfest sale.
