Milk prices will increase 1.4 cents per litre on Feb. 1
Price hike needed to cover higher processing and delivery costs, says NB Farm Products Commission
New Brunswickers will be paying more for milk next month.
The price will increase 1.4 cents per litre, effective Feb. 1, the New Brunswick Farm Products Commission announced on Thursday.
"A modest price adjustment was necessary based on several factors, most notably the increased costs of the processing and delivery of milk to consumers," commission chair Bob Shannon said in a statement.
The increase comes on the heels of a three cent price hike last year. At that time, the commission also cited higher processing and delivery costs, as well as production expenses.
Although the price consumers pay at stores is going up, the prices for the School Milk Program will remain unchanged for the current school year, said Shannon.
The program, started in 1995, offers savings to students by having dairy producers and processors subsidize the price of milk in schools by about $1 million per year, he said.
The commission represents producers, processors and consumers and is responsible for setting the price of fluid milk products in New Brunswick
