Main Street has reopened to traffic after a transport truck stuck underneath the subway overpass in downtown Moncton caused traffic to reroute Friday morning.

Crews had been trying since 5:30 a.m. to free the truck.

The vehicle got stuck under the span known as the Subway Overpass on Main Street.

The truck had to be unloaded by hand before it could be moved.

City officials also said they planned on letting the air out of the trucks tires to help remove it.

The driver, who didn't want to give his name, recalled the last few seconds before the accident.

He said he remembers thinking he could make it under the span and then hearing a crunch.

He said he's been driving trucks for 30 years but has only been with this company for three weeks.

The truck was hauling about 400 wood pallets from Stellarton, N.S., to the Moncton Industrial Park.

RCMP Const. Jeff Agnew said there won't be any charges arising from this incident.

"He was basically following his GPS, and therefore was going blindly, following the GPS, didn't realize how low it was, and collided with The Subway," he said.

The accident attracted several onlookers.

Ray Keays grabbed a coffee to take in the spectacle.

He's a trucker himself, so he felt some sympathy for the driver.

"There's signage all the way down the street here. I mean, if you don't see it, you're not paying attention," he said.

"But this Subway, I don't know. Maybe they should dig the street down, lower the street down. Maybe trucks can get through it, solve the problem there."
