Runners take over many streets in Moncton Sunday in the annual Legs for Literacy event.

More than 4,000 runners, walkers and volunteers are involved in the weekend event that began Friday evening and concludes Sunday.

A full marathon and half marathon are scheduled to start at 8 a.m. Sunday, with 10K and 5K runs or walks set to start at 8:30 a.m.

The start/finish line for all the events is on Main Street in front of the Delta Beauséjour and Assumption Plaza.

A livestream of the start/finish area will be carried on cbc.ca/nb.

The running events will disrupt traffic with full or partial closures of more than a dozen streets.

"We are asking all motorists for their patience and extreme caution as they drive through each of the three communities and to be on the lookout for runners and walkers," said Susan Edgett, the race director.

All funds raised during the weekend and directed toward literacy programs in the community. Last year, $128,000 was raised, pushing the total to $506,000 raised since the first event in 2000.
