Fredericton airport loses Sunwing flights to Cuba

Sunwing is moving its Cuba flight service to the Saint John Airport instead of the Fredericton airport this year.

Sunwing service will be offered at Saint John Airport instead this year

The Fredericton International Airport is losing its direct Sunwing flight service to Cuba — at least temporarily.

The airline is switching the service over to the Saint John Airport instead this year.

FIAA president and CEO David Innes says it's the result of a disagreement between Sunwing and Air Canada over the baggage handling of flights in and out of Fredericton.

"We tried to help facilitate a solution that would have seen the service remain at the Fredericton airport this year, but since this is an issue between the two carriers and doesn’t involve the airport directly, the fact is we are limited in what we can do," Innes said in a statement on Thursday.

"Sunwing has stressed this this is simply an interruption in service and that the airline has every intention of being back at the Fredericton airport next year," the statement said.

Sunwing has offered service to Varadero, Cuba, in February and March for the past several years in Fredericton.
