Jury deliberations at Dennis Oland's murder trial into Day 4

The jury at Dennis Oland's second-degree murder trial in Saint John is holed up for a fourth day of deliberations at the Saint John Law Courts building today.

The eight men and four women reconvened at 9 a.m. AT after putting in an 11½-hour day Friday without reaching a verdict.

They have spent more than 28 hours discussing the case behind closed doors since Wednesday afternoon and have not yet asked any questions or sought any clarifications.

Their decision must be unanimous.

Oland, 47, is accused in the bludgeoning death of his father, prominent New Brunswick businessman Richard Oland more than four years ago.

The body of the 69-year-old multimillionaire was discovered in his Saint John office on July 7, 2011. He had suffered 45 sharp and blunt force injuries to his head, neck and hands. No weapon was ever found.

His only son, Dennis Oland, was the last known person to see him alive during a meeting at his office the night before, where they discussed family genealogy.

The trial started on Sept. 16, making it one of the longest criminal trials in New Brunswick history.

The jury will remain sequestered until they reach a verdict, or announce an impasse.
