N.B. COVID-19 roundup: 13 new cases, Moncton region has highest vaccination rate

New Brunswick has 13 new cases of COVID-19, 11 of them in the Moncton region, Zone 1, which has the majority of the province's active cases and also has the highest vaccination rate of all the health zones, Public Health revealed Wednesday.

There is a gap of roughly five percentage points between its rate of 71.7 per cent of New Brunswickers aged 12 and older who are fully vaccinated and the health zone with the lowest rate, the Edmundston region, Zone 4, at 67 per cent of the eligible population. That zone is currently the only one of seven with no detected active cases.

"The breakdown of vaccination rates by zone is something we have been asked recently by those curious about how different areas are doing," Dr. Jennifer Russell, chief medical officer of health, said in a statement.

"The difference between zones is not a lot but, throughout the vaccination campaign, that kind of data has helped Public Health determine if there are areas that may require extra pushes to help people get vaccinated in a timely manner," she said.

"Obviously, we want to see all areas with as high a vaccination rate as possible."

The Moncton region now has 56 of the province's 71 active cases.

Earlier this week, Russell said the growing "cluster" of cases in the Moncton region involves young people who are not fully immunized, meaning they either have no vaccine, only one vaccine or they were infected before their second dose had enough time to take full effect.

Ninety per cent of the then-48 cases were under the age of 40, Russell had said, appealing to young people to book an appointment, if they hadn't already done so, and to encourage their friends to do the same.

The Moncton region actually has the highest vaccination rates among those aged 20-29 at 54.1 per cent, according to figures released to CBC News on Wednesday by the Department of Health.

The second dose rates among people in their 20s for the other zones are:

• Zone 2 (Saint John region): 53.5 per cent
• Zone 3 (Fredericton region): 52.6 per cent
• Zone 4 (Edmundston region): 45.9 per cent
• Zone 5 (Campbellton region): 41.1 per cent
• Zone 6 (Bathurst region): 49.6 per cent
• Zone 7 (Miramichi region): 51.4 per cent

Overall, 70.2 per cent of New Brunswickers aged 12 and older are now double-dosed, up from 69.9 on Tuesday, while 83 per cent have received at least one dose, up from 82.9.

According to the COVID-19 dashboard, another 2,155 people rolled up their sleeves, including 1,943 for their second shot and 462 for their first.

Here is the regional breakdown of those aged 12 and older who are fully vaccinated:

• Zone 1 (Moncton region): 71.7 per cent
• Zone 2 (Saint John region): 70.3 per cent
• Zone 3 (Fredericton region): 68.7 per cent
• Zone 4 (Edmundston region): 67.0 per cent
• Zone 5 (Campbellton region): 68.0 per cent
• Zone 6 (Bathurst region): 71.2 per cent
• Zone 7 (Miramichi region): 70.2 per cent

A walk-in and by-appointment clinic offering the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine as first or second doses was held Wednesday afternoon at the Moncton Coliseum between.

Several community vaccination clinics continue to accept walk-ins. A list is available online.

People can also book an appointment online through a Horizon or Vitalité health network clinic or through a participating pharmacy.

They are asked to bring their Medicare card, a signed consent form and, for those receiving a second dose, a copy of the record of immunization they received after getting their first dose.

12 of 13 cases in their 20s

All but one of the 13 new cases confirmed Wednesday are among people in their 20s.

Moncton region, Zone 1, 11 cases:

• 10 people 20 to 29
• A person 30 to 39

Nine of the cases are contacts of previously confirmed cases and two are under investigation.

Saint John region, Zone 2, two cases:

• Two people aged 20 to 29

One case is travel-related and the other is under investigation.

There are still no hospitalizations in New Brunswick because of the respiratory disease.

New Brunswick has had 2,460 confirmed cases of COVID-19 during the pandemic. There have been 2,342 recoveries so far and 46 COVID-related deaths.

A total of 389,264 COVID tests have been conducted.

New possible exposures

Four new possible COVID-19 exposure notices have been added to the growing list for the Moncton region, Zone 1.

The notices include:

• McDonald's – 900 Mountain Rd., Moncton, on Aug. 10 between 5:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m.
• Pump House – Brewpub and Restaurant, 5 Orange Lane, Moncton, on Aug.6 and Aug. 7
• Navigator Pub – 190 Robinson Court, Moncton, on Aug. 6 between 11 p.m. and midnight
• Sandbar – Brewpub and Restaurant, 70 Pointe du Chêne Rd., Pointe-du-Chêne, on  Aug.3 between 8 p.m. and 10 p.m.

There are also six new possible exposures in the Saint John region, Zone 2:

Anyone with symptoms of the virus, as well as anyone who has been at the site of a possible public exposure is being urged to request a test online or call Tele-Care 811 to get an appointment.

Atlantic COVID roundup

Nova Scotia reported three new cases of COVID-19 on Wednesday and 19 active cases.

Newfoundland and Labrador has no new cases and five active cases.  

Prince Edward Island has two new cases, for a total of eight active cases.

What to do if you have a symptom

People concerned they might have COVID-19 can take a self-assessment test online.

Public Health says symptoms of the illness have included a fever above 38 C, a new or worsening cough, sore throat, runny nose, headache, a new onset of fatigue, and difficulty breathing.

In children, symptoms have also included purple markings on the fingers and toes.

People with one of those symptoms should stay at home, call 811 or their doctor and follow instructions.
