Celebrating women in music on the East Coast
Rose Cousins leads the charge with 6 nominations at 2021 East Coast Music Awards
P.E.I. singer-songwriter Rose Cousins sits at the top of the list of women nominees with six in total, including artist of the year and album of the year. Songwriter Catherine MacLellan and singer Rachel Beck (both also hail from P.E.I.), and rock band Like a Motorcycle have each received three nominations.
Also of note, the ECMAs have appointed three new women to the Board of Directors – Delvina Bernard, Patricia Bourque, and Eva George – who will spearhead committees for the African Canadian Artist of the Year Award, the Indigenous Artist of the Year Award, and the Francophone Recording of the Year Award. These committees will focus on outreach, relationship building, knowledge gathering, and collaborative recommendations within these marginalized communities
The 2021 version of the East Coast Music Awards is happening May 5-9 in Sydney, Cape Breton, although the format of the festival and show will be determined by restrictions around COVID-19. Last year's show was unexpectedly virtual after it was postponed in May due to the pandemic. In 2020 the two-hour broadcast occured on July 11, with pre-recorded performances and no audience.
