The name Charlotte has jumped the line in New Brunswick this year as one of the most popular baby names of 2024, used 36 times, according to preliminary results from Service New Brunswick.

It topped the list with Noah, used a whopping 49 times. Noah fell behind slightly in 2023, but was also the most popular name in 2022.

In 2023, Liam and Olivia led the pack — with both names taking the top spots or close to it over the last few years.

While Charlotte was on the list of other popular names for the last few years, it hasn't cracked the top five since 2021, according to news releases from Service New Brunswick.

Other popular baby names for 2024 were Liam (used 33 times), Oliver (32), Henry (31), Jack (28), Olivia (31), Amelia (21), Elizabeth (19) and Ellie (19).

In 2016, Charlotte saw a bit of a surge, having its most popular year since 1980 in New Brunswick — one year after the royal baby Charlotte was born.

That was found in a 2019 analysis by CBC News that looked at the top names over a 40-year period. That analysis concluded that Sarah was one of the top names from 1980 to 2019, but that name last appeared in the top 20 in 2009.

New Brunswick's neighbours, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island, also recently released their top names of 2024. Both also had Charlotte at the top, used 33 times in Nova Scotia and 10 times in P.E.I.

Alongside Charlotte, both provinces had Theodore — used 41 times in Nova Scotia and 10 times in P.E.I.

According to the Service New Brunswick release, the preliminary results show that there were 5,822 births registered in the province from Jan. 1 to Dec. 15, 2024 — though this number could change. Last year, the preliminary results for 2023 showed 4,642 registered births for that period, but the actual number ended up being 6,041.
