The Canada Games Aquatic Centre is co-operating with the Saint John Police in the investigation into a fatal accident during a public swim on Sunday.

17-year-old Chinese student died of his injuries on Tuesday at the Saint John Regional Hospital.

The aquatic centre said in a statement released on Wednesday that it has not yet determined the exact cause of the accident.

The facility had six lifeguards on duty when the teen went under water. Interviews with those lifeguards are ongoing, however, the aquatic centre said they responded to the emergency, tried to resuscitate the teen and called 911.

The aquatic centre said it is also interviewing supervisors, reviewing surveillance tapes and sharing all of its information with the investigating officers.

It is extending condolences to the teen's family, who are expected to arrive in Saint John on Thursday from their home in China.

The teen had just started classes at Simonds High School in Saint John last week.

The aquatic centre is reassuring the public that it takes safety very seriously and all lifeguards are fully trained in accident prevention and emergency response.
