Some voters frustrated by long lineups at advance polls
Elections Canada says it couldn't have predicted such a large turnout
Some people were vexed by the long lines at advance polls in the province today, as New Brunswickers turned out in large numbers to cast their votes.
"It's an organizational issue, it's not good, it will keep people away," said Fredericton voter Tim Kairns. "Luckily they're open for the next four days, but still, this is the second time here today and we still can't get in."
Chris Wilson, also of Fredericton, said everything went smoothly for him, but he saw others struggling with the process.
Everyone is just backed up because there's only one polling station.- Chris Wilson, Fredericton voter
"[A] couple of elderly ladies, they didn't have proper ID and they had to sign this, and do this. And everyone is just backed up because there's only one polling station."
A spokesperson for Elections Canada said the agency couldn't have predicted such a large turnout.
"It's regrettable, but this is what happens when everyone decides to show up at the same time," said Francoise Enguehard.
"The returning officers, and the people in charge of the offices will do everything they can, and they have that flexibility, to make sure they try to accommodate the people who come."
The polls are open from noon until 8pm until Monday night.
