Education Minister Yves Bolduc on Monday promised nearly $247 million to help Quebec schools with construction projects and acquiring new buildings.

Twelve new schools will be built with the money, and 20 others will expand their current spaces over the next 12 to 24 months. There will be a total of 34 projects, including 15 on the island of Montreal:

  • Montreal: 15
  • Laurentians/Lanaudière: 7
  • Laval: 2
  • Montérégie: 5
  • Quebec City: 2
  • Outaouais: 2
  • Saguenay: 1

Bolduc made the announcement at St-Bernard school in Quebec City.

He said his office has received 60 expansion requests from Quebec schools, and that this announcement would take care of about 30 per cent of those requests.

Most of the work will begin in the spring, Bolduc said.

The money is part of the province's long-term infrastructure plan.
