A Quebec woman who used a wheelchair is dead after being hit by a driver west of Montreal on Thursday night.

The 47-year-old woman was travelling along Chemin du Fleuve in a 50 km/h zone when the accident happened just before 6 p.m.

The woman, a resident of nearby Les Cèdres, was walking her dog when the car hit her from behind, said provincial police spokesman Gregory Gomez del Prado.

"The car fled the scene, and eight kilometres [later], the driver went off the road himself, he had an accident," he said.

Police arrested the middle-aged man, who they say did not have a valid driver's licence.

He'll appear in court in Valleyfield, southwest of Montreal, on Friday to face related charges, including impaired driving causing death.

The woman's dog survived the collision.
