A Via Rail passenger train en route to Halifax was forced to stop early this morning because of a car derailment of a freight train in the Mont-Joli region last night.

The passenger train couldn't go any farther than Amqui, Que.

Buses have been called to take passengers to their destinations. Many are still en route to pick up the passengers.

People awaiting passengers are asked to call Via Rail at 1-888-888-5909 to get an estimated time when passengers will arrive at their destinations.

The first passengers are expected to arrive in Moncton at 6 p.m.

The derailed car was carrying wood chips. It didn't roll over when it left the tracks, and has since been put back on the rails.

CN said the track will be cleared this afternoon, and there were no injuries.
