The Montreal Children's moves to MUHC: What you need to know
A user's guide: The Montreal Children’s Hospital moves May 24
The second big move to the new superhospital will take place this weekend when the Montreal Children's Hospital, now located at 2300 Tupper Street in downtown Montreal, will move to the new Glen site.
About 100 patients will be moved to the new superhospital on Sunday — about one month after the Royal Victoria Hospital made the move.
Here's our MUHC user's guide to navigating the hospital this weekend.
What if I need emergency attention?
On Sunday morning at 5 a.m., the doors to the Children's emergency room at the old hospital will close. At the same time, the Children's ER at the new MUHC will open.
Any child requiring emergency medical services who would usually go to the Children's on Tupper Street after 5 a.m. should go directly to the new Children's emergency room at the Glen site.
Those who do not have an emergency have been asked not to visit the Children's Hospital until May 25.
What if my child is at the Children's?
Starting at 7 a.m. on May 24, a convoy of 18 ambulances and one Médicar will move approximately 100 patients from the old Children's to the new one.
One patient, accompanied by a nurse, will be transferred every three minutes. For extreme cases, a physician or a respiratory specialist may be aboard the ambulance.
It should take no more than 15 minutes for a patient to be transferred from bed to bed. Police will control traffic along the route but streets will not be closed to other traffic.
Can I be with my child in the ambulance?
One parent is allowed in the ambulance per patient unless the child's condition is considered to be critical.
Parents of patients in the neonatal and pediatric intensive care units will be asked to wait at the new hospital, because of limited space in the ambulance that will be used to host specialists and other special equipment.
A team of social workers will check in with patients and their families before and after the move. Social workers will be at the new hospital for family members waiting for their children to be transferred.
All patients will be informed by their specialist's office if the move affects his or her treatment.
You can use your current hospital card when visiting the new Children's Hospital provided the information on it is up-to-date.
What if my family member or friend, who is not a child, is at the Glen site?
Family members and friends who wish to visit patients in the hospital are asked to wait until after 2 p.m. on May 24.
