Stolen Riopelle art found on Kijiji
Quebec provincial police say they have found stolen lithographs by the Québécois artist Jean-Paul Riopelle that were posted for sale on the internet.
The lithographs are part of four albums called Le Cirque, which were stolen sometime between August 1999 and August 2004 from the offices of an art dealer. Each album contained 12 prints, photos and text.
Four of the lithographs are still missing, and police are asking for the public's help to recover them.
Investigators were able to recover most of the works after finding the four albums for sale on the classified advertising website Kijiji. Police said they received help from several members of the public.
Each lithograph was worth between $3,000 and $5,000, said police. An entire album would be worth approximately $40,000.
Luc St-Jean, 39, appeared at the Montreal courthouse on May 18 to face several counts, including theft and obstructing a public officer or peace officer.
Police are asking that anyone with information on the works contact them at 1-800-659-4264.
