Jean-Baptiste Day is Quebec's official "national" holiday. There's a parade in downtown Montreal, but many government offices and businesses are closed for Quebec's true start to summer.

St-Jean-Baptiste Day, officially known as the Fête nationale du Québec, brings a parade to downtown Montreal and a number of closures to government offices and businesses around the city. 

Here's a breakdown of what's open and what's closed for the June 24 holiday.

Pickup services

  • Garbage, green waste and recyclables are being picked up by their regular schedule except in Lachine, Ville-Marie and Villeray–Saint-Michel–Parc-Extension where they are postponed.
  • Eco-centres are open according to their regular summer schedules.

Activities

  • The Fête Nationale parade starts at the corner of Ste. Catherine and Guy streets at 1 p.m., proceeding east on Ste. Catherine Street to de Bleury Street near Place des Festivals.
  • Arenas, pools, libraries and cultural centres vary according their their boroughs.
  • The Pointe-à-Callière Montréal Museum of Archaeology and History will be open.
  • The Biodôme, Insectarium, Planetarium and Botanical Garden are open. More information here.
  • The Complexe sportif Claude-Robillard will be closed. 

Shopping

  • Shopping centres, SAQ outlets, banks, most supermarkets are closed.
  • Many pharmacies, gas stations and restaurants remain open despite the holiday, though some may have reduced hours.
  • The Atwater, Jean-Talon, Maisonneuve and Lachine markets are open.

Government and transit

  • Government offices and municipal administration offices are closed.
  • Post offices are closed and there is no delivery or collection.
  • Some STM bus routes have been altered or are running on a holiday schedule. Check the schedule here.
  • Parking pay stations and meters remain operational.
