Animal rendering plant causing horrible smell, RDP resident says
Theo Vecera wants the Sanimax rendering plant to adopt new measures to contain the odour
Children in Rivière-des-Prairies can't play outside without occasionally being confronted with a stench so strong that it sends them running inside complaining of nausea.
That is one of the ways Rivière-des-Prairies resident Theo Vecera describes the effects of the smell from a rendering plant near his house.
The smell, says Vecera, is like "vomit times ten."
Vecera lives near the Sanimax rendering plant, which collects and processes animals and meat by-products. He has noticed a strong odour ever since he moved to the area five years ago.
"There's been already a few instances when the kids are playing outside, and in the blink of an eye, they're all running inside, saying 'daddy, daddy, it feels like I'm going to throw up,'" said Vecera.
He called a community meeting to address the problem, speaking to borough councillor Manuel Guedes about possible solutions.
Guedes thinks the company should build an airtight garage and install special filters on delivery trucks to keep in the smell.
"We want Sanimax to take initiatives ... and to show some good faith," said Guedes.
Vecera is organizing a door-to-door campaign to get more people involved in the issue.
Calls to Sanimax for comment were not returned.
