Montreal Mafioso gets 14 years for plotting to kill New York rival
Raynald Desjardins pleaded guilty to conspiracy in 2015 for his role in murder of American Mob boss
A ranking member of Montreal's Mafia has been given 14-year sentence for conspiring to murder a Mob rival from New York.
Raynald Desjardins pleaded guilty to the conspiracy charge in 2015, acknowledging his role in the death of Mob boss Salvatore Montagna, killed in Charlemagne in 2011.
Montagna was murdered just months after Desjardins narrowly escaped an attempt on his own life.
A gunman wielding an AK-47 sprayed Desjardins's SUV with 17 bullets as he was getting into the vehicle in Laval.
On Monday, a Quebec judge confirmed the proposal for Desjardins's sentence, which had been submitted jointly by the Crown and the defence.
Taking into account time already served, Desjardins has six and a half years left to serve in prison.
Nicknamed "Sal the Iron Worker," Montagna owned and operated a successful steel business in the U.S.
The FBI once called him the acting boss of the Bonanno crime family — prompting one of New York's tabloids to dub him the "Bambino Boss" because of his rise to power in his mid-30s.
