Option Nationale leads alternative parties with 30,735 votes

Left-wing progressive sovereigntist party Option Nationale walked away from last night's election with the biggest share of votes among Quebec's alternative parties, with 30,735 votes in all.

Much of last night's focus was on Quebec’s four main political parties — the Quebec Liberal Party, the Parti Québécois, the Coalition Avenir Québec and Québec Solidaire.

But 2. 7 per cent of the popular vote, and a total of 87,203 ballots, went to candidates running for Quebec’s non-sitting parties.

None of those parties managed to scoop up a seat in the national assembly, but some of them did come away with a significant number of votes.

Option Nationale, which ran 116 candidates, led among Quebec's alternative parties with 0.7 per cent of the popular vote.

The Green Party, which ran 44 candidates, followed behind Option Nationale with 0.6 per cent of the popular vote and 23,266 total votes.

A total of 14 political parties without elected representatives registered candidates in the 2014 Quebec election, including:
